What is your professional background?
I graduated from Iowa State in 1988 with a degree in journalism and mass communication on the advertising track (with a minor in psychology). Right out of college, I worked for the West Des Moines Community School District in a PR/comms role. After that I worked for in an in-house advertising agency for a fashion brand in New York. After I returned to Des Moines, I managed a pre-press department for a large printer, which was a leader in variable data and digital printing. With the skills I acquired there, I moved on to working for a few companies that focused on direct mail. At that time, Todd Senne (the other founder of Trilix) and I were working together and decided we should start our own direct marketing business. We were just successful enough to purchase Porter & Associates in 2004 and shortly thereafter renamed our venture Trilix.
What motivates you at work?
I love solving problems, whether it’s a marketing challenge or a business-related process that needs improvement. My position allows me to work closely with clients and with the team to manage Trilix.
If you didn’t work in this industry, what career path would you choose?
Seeing as how I am still working in the subject I studied in college, I haven’t given that much thought. For a couple of summers during college, I worked on the grounds crew for a golf course. That was a great job and sounds like a good option for the future.
